The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) “…the Awakening” CD review

by Metal Rulez

By Poodle)

The recently disbanded group Gates of Slumber was quite a well-known object in the doom metal firmament, however, ashamed to admit, the music of this team meet for the first time right now, on the occasion of the renewal of their full-length debut in 2004. Resumption made by Abyss records in the past year is different from the original one bonus track, as amended by the order of “songs” as well as new artwork and cover (drawn by Ken Kelly, known for his jokes cover Manowar, Kiss, Rainbow and … books on Conan) . The fact that I did not know this band before is of course proof of my ignorance, but when describing re-edit this has the plus that I do not have to exert yourself how should I describe something he knows by heart, hehe. In any case – I do not know why, but I associate the Gates of Slumber playing some mighty funeral doom or something like that, while it turned out that – at least on the debut – it was playing quite traditional. So at this point I could begin to write in cliches about sabbathowych riffs, Saint Vitus weight, etc. However, the first thought while associating with the “Awakening” went in my case, in the direction of Oakland and works of masters from Sleep. More precisely, the debut of this formation. The opening number of the publishing house “Resurrection from the Underworld” could easily be found on that album – especially the vocals can be associated just with the Dream. But the “Awakening” is an album – as much as possible the fairly conservative convention of course – varied in subsequent issues goes, for example, heavy metal guitar solo, dirtier, even punkujace, garage motives (of course not la Exploited, rather in the style of hardcore tour St . Vitus …), some slightly psychedelic (or rather the desert?) climates also found … and the “Executioner” from the beginning seems to be almost a carbon copy “Sign of the Wolf” Pentagram! Generally, “Awakening” album feels too can the original (although remember that a decade ago, some other things were on top …), but a well-thought-out and robust and simply successful. For fans of such heavy barbaric play – the position can not mandatory but strongly recommended.

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) “…the Awakening” CD review

by www.vs-webzine.com

By Olivier ‘Zoltar’ Badin

I confess, I confess, I’ve never been a customer 100% satisfied with the GATES OF SLUMBER THE case. However, the group had anything to please me a plethora of literary references fly by ultra overused, but every time (Robert E. Howard, HP Lovecraft), a diehard attitude and unwavering faith against d a ‘real’ doom which at the time of the formation in 1998, was then far from being returned to the odor of sanctity, as is the case today. Yet, while having the chance to be friends with Frederic Caure (then a member of THEE PLAGUE OF GENTLEMEN and future Serpentcult) when the latter told me he rode his own label named FINAL CHAPTER RECORDS and more than a compilation, his first album would be one of the first of this trio from the depths of Indiana, I have not spit in the soup, while chronicling the beast to do HARD HEAVY then posing in a corner to do more (too much) to return. Until now … Today, nine years after its initial release and its disappearance from radar screens (FINAL CHAPTER having had, in the end, a life too short), what strikes me the most with this reissue of ‘… The Awakening’ is primarily how the style of the group was already in place. Despite a different line-up (we then found the APOSTLE OF SOLITUDE future Chuck Brown on drums), his total devotion and unrestrained in SAINT VITUS was then very firmly in place. Certainly, his influences, heavy metal the old ‘were already there too. But contrary to what happened on the following discs (with mixed results elsewhere enough), it is only a backdrop or a visit to a particular riff. And now with a new cover a hundred times more appropriate than the original (and signed by the great illustrator of fantasy and Conan, Ken Kelly), I realize that not only the time did nothing to blunt the blade their ax but in addition, it is perhaps still there, despite its flaws and its side a little broke, their best album to date. Sharper in the soul as ‘Conqueror’ (2007), less ass between two chairs that during the period of ‘Hymns Of Blood And Thunder’ (2009) and less pessimistic than in ‘The Wretch’ (2011), THE GATES OF SLUMBER then a warlike do so with no half measure. Even ring sometimes quite raw and not even try to use a rhythm guitar as a ‘carpet’ when Karl Simon solo part in the Dave Chandler. Moreover, even if this great mustache already balding on the head sounded OZZY OSBOURNE already as the poor, his texts then going straight to the point (everything you need to know about “The Executioner” or “Broken On The Wheel” is contained in the title) were so perfectly in tune with the doom absolute. And a bonus track taken from their third demo (“The Cloaked Figure”) in addition, as with Champomy, the party is even more crazy for 54 minutes. No wonder then that these barbarians were great friends with REVEREND BIZARRE mule for level heads and sure of their mission, it was the best thing since …

The GATES OF SLUMBER (U.S.) Interview

by Extreme Underground Music Zine

By OccultBlackMetal

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days?

Currently we are working on songs and arrangements for our next record. Other than that watching the world go by, not much.

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new ep and it how it differs from previous releases?

I don’t know man. It’s really just kind of what we’ve always done. I guess people should pick up a copy then go buy all our other releases (a few shirts and what not as well) and make up their own minds (ahem www.slumberingsouls.com)

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?

Alienation and disillusion. Ambivalence. Addiction. Fear and loathing.

4. I know that the band has written some songs on Swords And Sorcery, can you tell us more about your interest in this topic?

Jason and I both grew up with comics and fantasy/horror movies and novels.  And for a long time we did songs based on that stuff.  The early days of the band had lyrics that were full of allegorical passages. Songs like The Judge and Jury were basically about the judicial system. How fucked it is that one person sits in judgement over another. Or the concept of a jury of your “peers”. We went full on into the Conan stuff on Suffer no Guilt. Which, lyrically is the best of out fantasy stuff. And we kind of just kept it rolling for a few records. But it wore thin really quick, and we were starting to get labeled as a band that just did that kind of stuff. And we didn’t want that. Plus style wise we were becoming more a straight metal band. And personally I didn’t want that. I started doing this band because I wanted to play doom metal. So after the Hymns record was gone and the band had gone through some changes it was the chance to get back to center.

5. According to the Metal Archives page, the band was named after a sound from Cianide, what was it that interested you about this song in order to name the band after that?

Well, what it was is I had written about 5 or 6 songs. And one stoney night I was thinking that I needed to name this band, of which I was the solitary member. So after going through all the possibilities. And doodling a ton of logos. I decided on The Gates of Slumber. Really, I wish it was a deeper story.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

Highlights were both of our Doom Shall Rise appearances and Roadburn fest. I don’t know how to describe our stage show. I mean it’s three guys and we are all kind of big. Not a lot of running around. I guess not unlike Motörhead. Loud and we don’t move a lot.

7. Do you have any touring plans for the future?

You’ll have to wait and see.

8. Recently The Abyss Records, re-issued your 2004 album, what are you thoughts on the final product?

I’m really glad it’s back in print. It was one of the best moments of my life having that come out.

9. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of doom metal?

People seem to like it a lot. The return to form was very well received.

10. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

Polka maybe, I don’t know. Maybe Outlaw Country.

11. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Black Sabbath.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Macramé. Tuvan throat singing. Animal Husbandry. Calling off work because of phony illnesses.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Go to www.slumberingsouls.com and buy a bunch of shit.

By OccultBlackMetal

The  Gates  Of  Slumber  are  a  band  from Indiana  that  plays  a  very  traditional  form  of  doom   metal and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2004  album  “The  Awakening”  which  was  re-issued  by  The  Abyss  Records  during  the  year  of  2012.

Drums  are  all  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats  being  present  on  this  recording,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very   strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that dominates  throughout  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars  are  all  slow  to  mid  paced  traditional  doom  metal  riffs  that  utilize  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  in  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  old  school  sounding  doom  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads.

Vocals  are  mostly  clean  singing  doom  metal  vocals  with  some  more  aggressive  elements  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  lyrics  cover  Sword  And  Sorcery,  Hate  and  War,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy,  dark,  professional  and  old  school  sound  to  it  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording with  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  The Gates  Of  Slumber  are  a  very  great  sounding  traditional  doom  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this album. RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  “The  Judge”  “Broken  On  The  Wheel”  and  “Blessed  Pathway  To  The  Celestial  Kingdom”.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Reprints have become more than ever a craze? It just seems to me that in recent years is enormous and at times unwarranted use such a means to give birth to anything? Like all decisions in life, also bring back a disc should have its own why. Sometimes, however, see album insignificant, regardless of personal preference, or left a few months before put back into circulation in formats ultra luxury – then substantial additions often have little or nothing – quite irritating. It is also true that if certain operations do not exist Many would not be able to get hold of various beads, some for personal reasons or just for the misfortune of not having had the time to retrieve a record produced even in limited edition. gems of writing reborn, the Abyss Records provides the its contribution, giving new life to the first album of The Gates Of Slumber, now a veteran of the band in Indianapolis doom scene. The three decades of career paths far from the trio led by guitarist and vocalist Karl Simon had as the first turning point of the publication debut “… The Awakening”, arrived after giving birth to three demo. The sound of the formation at the time completed by Jason McCash on bass and drummer Chuck Brown (the latter is no longer in line-up, the drums now there is Iron Bob Fouts), is a great blend of Black Sabbath Ozzy period, Saint Vitus, references to the epic and dark Manilla Road to Celtic Frost. His revival in this capacity modernized does not have some kind of extreme changes, the most obvious notes reside in the title intro saddled anticipating “The Awakening (Interpolating The Wrath Of The Undead)”, which at one time without a name has now become “Resurrection From The Underworld”; inserting a closure of the ladder of bonus track ” The Cloaked Figure “(also present in the vinyl version edited by Iron Kodex, but contains five additional songs), taken from the demo of the same name released in 2004, and in graphics today, curated by Ken Kelly, an artist who has already worked with The Gates Of Slumber at “Suffer No Guilt” and that many will remember for sure for the various works created for Manowar and the Rainbow “Rising”. “… The Awakening” has given birth to a job live and transmit impulses from the old school, and certainly at the time it became part of the collections of many regular users of the genre. However, if you had not had the opportunity in the past, now here, do not miss this one, this record is worth, as indeed deserves everything so far has been given to these musicians, the doom fluid flowing through their veins.

This is a re-release of their out of print first album from back in 2006 with an added bonus song by this doom metal band from Indianapolis.

It starts off with a cool intro which sets the mood of the album and then the first song begins, slow almost creeping in its heaviness. The album creeps by like watching molasses flow uphill in winter, not fast at all, except for two songs which the band picks up the pace and for them, lets loose. Those were the two songs that I liked the most, the BLACK SABBATH worshipping was a bit much for a whole album, the slowness just got to me after a while and I needed something a bit peppier. As a doom metal band, they are pretty good, the singing and playing are really well done, you can hear the talent that they have, but as a first album, you hope that they would leave behind the SABBATH and move into their own style on later releases.

I did enjoy the album and would recommend it if you are a doom fan, it would be a good purchase, I just wanted a bit more speed, but that’s what happens when you listen to doom.

The debut of the Doomster from Indianapolis came back in 2004 with “Final Chapter Records”. In 2011 they released their last regular album “The Wretch”, then took Abyss Records in the matter, and throws out the debut again. The heartbeat intro with the clock tower heralds the fall, and you grooving to Saint Vitus moderately through the song while singing is more like the Swedish Count Raven. The quality of the nine songs, scrape the happy times at the ten minute mark, is not open to doubt. The trio named after a song by Cianide delivered, then from an official album, which we now have to re-acquire. Three small differences to the first edition are here. The intro and the first song are now separated, there’s “The Cloaked Figure” at the end of a bonus track, and the new version uses a different cover. None other than Ken Kelly, who already for Kiss, Manowar and Rainbow handed in his works, stands responsible for the pictured Warrior. Pretty round thing, because not only the beat-Hard’ler.
