The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review

by Transcending Obscurity

By Kunal Choksi

The Gardnerz (it’s such a pain to spell it right) is a Doom/Death Metal band from Sweden. These guys play something like a heavier, Death Metal version of Stoner Doom. For reference, think of European bands such as Runemagick, mid-period Amorphis and a bit of Stoner era Celestial Season. It sounds very good on paper, and it is on disc as well.

If you are familiar with the above bands, you’d know what to expect – groovy, plodding Death/Doom with more emphasis on riffs over atmosphere. Thanks to the Runemagick influences, there are the Middle-Eastern-sounding riffs and solos that are instantly appealing. The hooks are powerful and are bound to stay in your mind well after the album is over. Between the trippy riffing are the melodic parts and acoustic sections, bolstered by the faster and heavier Death Metal trudges. It’s all very coherently and tastefully done. The songs unravel naturally, nothing is forced despite them traversing a wide area of influences. It’s like every song has a tale to tell.

‘The System of Nature’ is a very absorbing album, rich with influences that aren’t limited to just a genre. It’s one of the better releases to have come out and deserves a place in your collection.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “It All Fades” CD EP review

by www.beowolfproductions.com

By Beowolf Productions

THE GARDNERZ is a Death / Doom Metal band hailing from Sweden. These guys started back in 2008 and have released two albums to date. “IT ALL FADES” is the following up to their “THE SYSTEM OF NATURE” which came out back in 2011. These guys base their sound in the Death Metal genre, but they do have some heavy Doom Metal influences all through out their music. The music is really low ended and mid ranged paced Death Metal. I really dig the heavy grooved out sound they have that is heavily drowned in Doom Metal. The guitar work at times does have a bit of Thrash Metal styles, especially in the crisper and cleaner guitar arrangements. They have a thick Sludge Metal sound to the guitars as well. I am a big fan of Sludge Metal, especially when it is mixed with crushing Death Metal, so I was really digging these guys a lot. The vocals are done in a thick throaty and groggy Death Metal growl style, but in a slower more drawn out style, which is where the heavy Doom Metal comes in again. It’s as if you were to merge together CROWBAR with any Southern Death Metal band from the 90’s. This is only a short release, but it is a very powerful one at that. If you like your Death Metal infused with some Doom Metal, then your gonna love THE GARDNERZ! They do a killer cover of DARKTHRONE’s “Transilvanian Hunger” too!

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review by www.metalpsalter.com

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review

by www.metalpsalter.com

By Chris

The Gardnerz spouts a Swedish brand of death/doom metal that makes the most of its melodious meandering within a slow-paced offering of well-crafted tunes that are fully sanctioned by the morose fan boy in us all.

While not as technically sound or diverse as fellow countrymen Opeth, The System of Nature squeezes out very last drop of solemnity from its saturated satchel of dark tunes. The vocals are the typical growling in the lowest of registers, but the mixing of throaty gasps and occasional breathy yells over music that defies conventional doom metal really makes the album. “Lady in the Grace” is a terrific song that has one hell of a main riff that really sets a sorrowed tone through the entire song. The vocal keeps drawing me back by switching from a somewhat black metal feel to a textbook death metal moan, which is perfect for this very moody album. I can’t even call this straight-forward doom metal because its position jumps from time to time. “Your Final Solution” actually reminds me of Slayer slowed to a virtual crawl, and that alone makes for an interesting blueprint.

I like the crawling-through-barbed-wire feel in these tracks as it seems to really carry the band over the anticipated pigeon-hole many bands of the genre fall into by either lump comparison or personal influences. Very rarely does a band ‘get into’ this style for hope of financial windfalls or delusions of grandeur; it’s a labor of love all over and The Gardnerz seem to be very good at what they’re currently doing because they believe in the music whole-heartedly. I usually steer clear of the lower registered vocals simply because I enjoy hearing the words enunciated at all points, but Niclas Ankarbranth manages to encompass both discernable vocals and a death metal attack that finds the perfect medium and passes the muster.

It’s a good thing to see Sweden on the map for some music of this style; the black metal exporting has to be tiring for that country by now! One listen to “Shift in Thought” and the odd vocal in it makes you realize that The Gardnerz may not be perfect, but they are most definitely interesting and warrant inclusion in your thought banks. I don’t think you’d be disappointed by expected the expected, yet reveling in the surprises and subtle nuances that set The System of Nature apart from the mundane or generic bands regurgitating the same thing.

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review

The Gardnerz, from Sweden, play Doom Metal, you who come to read this column abandon all hope then. Its founder is not a novice in the genre, Wilhelm has been bassist for the band Tristitia. The System Of Nature was recorded in 2010 in Stockholm and Santiago (Chile including Juan Pablo Donoso was originally the first drummer, and which has done from the boot).

First positive, the sound mastered and mixed by Dan Swanö is spot on. While the Doom heavy and slow, at times bordering on funeral march (as crushing More Or Less), there are, but not only. The melodic guitar arrangements to borrow Heavy metal of yesteryear, the rhythms can be made faster (Your Final Solution). The group also ventured in the field of progressive death metal (Born To Consume), which is reminiscent of Cynic. The Gardnerz explores the atmospheric metal (Confusion), but the coating of a healthy dose of Doom.
As for the singing, the vocals are from beyond the grave and are confined mainly in the register, with some incursions into the Black Metal (Lady In The Grave) and we find the clear vocals on the track “Maybe it’s time”. Some may find not only their account, it says Doom fans should not be affected by these choices. What can be more troublesome, however, is that sometimes it seems that the group wants to cram all its ideas and does not want to choose. This aspect may confuse a bit disjointed, but beyond that, all is well worth the road and throws in ones ear. This is certainly a very successful first attempt.

Note: The GARDNERZ “The System of Nature” was only mastered by Dan Swano, not mixed and mastered.

The Gardnerz (Sweden) “The System of Nature” review by Nocturnal Hall

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review

by Nocturnal Hall

By Goddess Sioux

The genre of doomed death metal has seemed to pick up speed over the last few years. Sweden of course shall give to us a supreme band in the form of THE GARDNERZ. You may dismiss the name upon first hearing it, but don’t let it fool you. THE GARDNERZ will amaze you with their gloomy mix of death metal and doom metal on The System Of Nature.

As the album begins with The Art Of Suffering you may think of Katatonia with its slow and somber guitar tones, but then the song cracks open to reveal growling death metal vocals and heavy Swedish leads. All while keeping a mid pace beat, if you can imagine that. The layers of the guitars are a dreamy sound scape of infinite melancholy. As the next song Lady In The Grave comes in we are treated to more elaborate vocals of both growling and black metal type screams, almost like a duel. Backed by intricate guitar leads that seem to mesmerize. As we go on to Shift In Thought the black metal vocals are back and the guitars are howling. Flaw In The Axiom will draw you in within the first few bars of the song, with its sorrowful and distant leads, as the song progresses into an abyss of dwelling, the ambient solo repeats throughout the song like a chorus. You aren’t going to find any fast paced songs or blast beats on this album. However, you aren’t going to find anything lame about it either. THE GARDNERZ know how to keep it heavy and they do it quite well. Think Runemagick, Amorphis and Hypocrisy if you will. There is definitely a Swedish old school sound to the guitars, and they dominate the album to their fullest potential. So many different sounds to them from acoustic to fast and heavy leads, and technically beautiful solos. Having just signed to Abyss records with Dan Swano at the controls, that should tell you right away that THE GARDNERZ are quite worthy, after only having been in existence for two years.
