BANE (Serbia) Interview

by Blackened Horde Zine

By Summon

Summon: How did the band get started?

Branislav: After quitting another band sometime in 2006, I had some riffs and ideas of mine that were not used in Sangre Eterna, so logically I decided to form my own project, which eventually became BANE.

Summon: What kind of music do you play?

Branislav: The style would be best described as Black/Death Metal.

Summon: How has the fan response been?

Branislav: Mostly positive I guess, judging from the hundreds of reviews published so far our albums got.

Summon: Where did the band name come from?

Branislav: Originally from Serbia, a small country in Eastern Europe. That was until this year, when the band re-located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

Summon: Introduce the band members and what they do in the band.

Branislav: The current line-up consists of Max on guitars (Frostbite), Edd on bass (HolloW, Karkaos) and Gabriel on drums (Brought By Pain).

Summon: Who writes the music? Lyrics?

Branislav: In 95% of the time, I write both the music and lyrics for the band.

Summon: And where do the lyric ideas come from?

Branislav: Chaos. Human abhorrence, ignorance and stupidity.

Summon: What is your view in Satanism and Occultism?

Branislav: No comment.

Summon: How many albums/CD’s have you released?

Branislav: So far we have released 2 full-length albums, 3 splits, 1 EP, a demo and just recently a brand new single entitled “In Darkness And Hatred” which is available as a free download via: http://nocturnemagazine.net/download/68/bane-in-darkness-and-hatred-single

Summon: Tell me about some the songs on the latest CD?

Branislav: It’s our fastest stuff yet. We raised the bar up to 240bpm on some songs there, and for the first time used some orchestral arrangements, keyboards and clean/choir vocals which was not heard on previous material.

Summon: Do you have any side projects?

Branislav: I have a Hard Rock band called Keychain, you can check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/keychainofficial

Summon: Who are some of your musical influences?

Branislav: As far as Metal bands go, here are some of my most inspirational ones: Dissection, Naglfar, Setherial, Dark Funeral, etc…other than that I really listen to just about any musical genre, no limits.

Summon: Which current bands?

Branislav: Lately I have been more into Modern Death Metal like: Job For A Cowboy, As I Lay Dying, The Black Dahlia Murder, etc…

Summon: What is the band like when you play live?

Branislav: Just four really passionate guys about Metal.

Summon: Have you guys ever played in another country?

Branislav: Yeah…so far we have played in over 10 European countries.

Summon: How big of crowd shows up at shows usually?

Branislav: That really depends…from 10-15 people, up to 200-300…it really depends on lots of things such as the bands on the bill, day of the week, season, venue, promotion, etc…

Summon: How is the crowd response when you play?

Branislav: It also really depends on the previously mentioned factors…but it’s very simple, actually – if the band gives their 666%, then so will the people in the crowd.

Summon: What do you think of the US Black Metal/Death Metal scene?

Branislav: There are few really amazing bands, that is for sure. My buddies from A Hill To Die Upon is a great example, also Abigail Williams have proven to be a great band, just to mention a few.

Summon: What do you think of the Overseas scenes?

Branislav: It’s really hard to generalize a question like that, but one thing I know for sure – everywhere there will be ups and downs. In just about any single country you will find great bands, great people.

Summon: What are some of new favorite black metal/death metal bands?

Branislav: To be quite honest, in the last year or so I did not come up with new bands that have really grabbed my attention in the Black/Death Metal scene. Mostly the bands or records I listen to are from lets say 1990 to about 2010, and just in those two decades there are tons and tons of good releases.

Summon: When do you guys plan on writing any new material?

Branislav: I am slowly writing some new songs, but at this very moment I have no clue when will it be finished, recorded nor released…time will tell.

Summon: What does the future hold for the band??

Branislav: If everything goes fine we will hit some stages in North America during 2014, and will work on some new stuff for sure.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) “Where Hope Turns Dripping Red” CD review by Whiplash

By Vitor Franceschini

There were five demos since 2002, year of its foundation, to the Dead Awaken reach this debut. And the hard work ‘extra field’ was very worthwhile, since “Where Hope Turns Dripping Red” is a beautiful album of Death Metal.

No innovations or inventions, the band shows they do not want to change the world with their sound, but keep intact the legacy of traditional Death Metal. The influences of Swedish Extreme Metal restricted to guitar tone, as the whole work hangs for something more obscure and anything melodic.

It should be noted that the work of Mats Blyckert battery is phenomenal, showing a refined technique and a great variation. Not to mention the insane face. The guitar work by the book, while the low realizes making the ground shake, to manage everything Jörgen Kristensen, who also howls well.

Highlighting the Kingdom of Damnation (Where Hope Turns Dripping Red), Rocket Symphony and his lilting compositions start to fight and then fall in Venom of the Population with his insane broken. A job that will appeal to true fans filled the Death Metal!

SEPTEKH (Sweden) “Apollonian Eyes” CD EP review by Whiplash

SEPTEKH (Sweden) “Apollonian Eyes” CD EP review

by Whiplash

By Vitor Franceschini

Nils Meseke (vocals), David Wikström (Guitar), Patrik Ström (bass) and David Wikström (drums) do not know much bureaucracy or ‘mirabolância’. So invest in a direct, aggressive and extreme sound Septekh this third EP, which has not released an official album.

There are four compositions directed to Death / Thrash Metal, but with great influence of Black roots. A good reference would be the Finns Impaled Nazarene, but Septekh has few influences from Punk / Hardcore.

With an organic production that arrives to cause nostalgia, the band distills direct and with a vein completely ‘from hell’ songs. This shows itself in Apollonian Eyes, Burn It To The Ground and Cursing The Skies. Have Vlad Tepes shows the most versatile side of the band and a more varied sound that closes the disc so masterful.

Produced and mixed by Eric Forsberg at Midtown Music in Sweden, “Apollonian Eyes” is more than a proof that the Septekh already deserves a debut. Fans of extreme metal of old will thank you.

DEAD AWAKEN (Sweden) “Where Hope Turns Dripping Red” CD review by www.beowolfproductions.com

By Beowolf Productions

“WHERE HOPE TURNS DRIPPING RED” is the debut full length release from Sweden’s DEAD AWAKEN. These guys have been around since 2002 and put out a bunch of demos prior to this release. These guys take things back to the old school. They play a combination of European & American Death Metal that was really big in the ’90’s. The music has that very brutal and aggressive European Death Metal sound mixed with a more technical American Death Metal style. These are both favorite styles of mine, so of course I was digging everything that DEAD AWAKEN was dishing out. The guitar work is some what intricate at times and then leads right into fast paced shredding madness with the mile a minute drum beats and blast doing the same. The vocals done by Jörgen Kristensen are a mid ranged to lower Death growl style. These guys are going to be huge in the Death Metal underground, especially after this album hits many ears. This is a must for fans of SUFFOCATION, DISMEMBER, CARCASS, AVULSED, ABORTED & INSISION!

Dead Awaken is a Swedish Death Metal band formed in 2002. They have had quite a string of releases thus far, but today we are taking a look at Where Hope Turns Bloods Red, released in 2013. As one would expect from their cover art, their lyrical themes are about war, quite fitting for a Death Metal band if you ask me. War is a brutal thing and so is Dead Awaken, a fitting combo.

Starting off I really liked the first track, the rest to follow were equally well done. The guitars are heavy and bombastic, as to be expected of the genre. They are well done and nice to listen to. As is typical of extreme metal the bass isn’t very loud, but there are times when you can hear it. They drums are fast and on time. They are very aggressive and hard hitting. They do not have any real flaws from what I can tell, everything sounds as it should. There as a lot of blasts used, but I was never annoyed by them. They are fitting. The vocals are typical Death fair, but are preformed competently. The music is quite fast paced, yet they know when to slow it down, which adds a lot and gives it a feel of dread. The mixing is well done. All in all, it is quite solid.

It is fitting in the times we live in to have a band that speaks about war and its brutalities. Here is a lyrical sample, taken from the track Mudhell. “Scar tissue graces Earth. Every trench is a wound. The war is bleeding our world. Into a cenotaph of souls. Eating its way through sanity. Our sentence carved in stone. Sorrow lingers in the fog. While lead greets flesh and bones.” Pretty powerful stuff, but it is 100% true. Humanity has always been a messed up race and war is one of our greatest crimes, it is nice to see and band covering the topic. Aside from their lyrical content, the music is good. There are no major flaws and I quite enjoyed the album. If you are a fan of Death Metal, you should check this out. Dead Awaken is a solid band with a great message. Notable tracks are Carnivore and Venom of the Population.

DEAD AWAKEN. What does that mean? I must be missing something, as that looks like an adjective-verb combination that doesn’t make sense. Unless that Death Metal Random Name Generator is playing up… Anyway, this band is made up of just two members, Jörgen Kristensen and Mats Blückert. The former appears to handle vocals, guitars and bass, so is clearly a talented musician (although they use a session bass player for live shows – so he clearly isn’t superhuman!) They have been in a number of Death Metal bands previously, namely ABYSSAL CHAOS, ABHOTH and SUFFER, none of whom I’ve heard, so this is my first exposure to their output. There are a lot of new Death Metal bands around at the moment and many of them seem to be playing old school Death Metal. These guys are no exception. I’m transported back to the early 90s again, this time to the sounds employed by bands like BAPHOMET, SINISTER and IMMOLATION. Do you have those albums? Classics like BAPHOMET’s “The Dead Shall Inherit” and SINISTER’s “Diabolical Summoning”? If so, you don’t need this (in my opinion). The band replicates the sound of these influences really well, but the songs don’t get close to the brilliance of those Death Metal pioneers. Of the influences listed, this reminds me most of the first two SINISTER albums. Lots of speed, very guttural (and effective) growling, heavy guitars, fast drumming, etc. Most of the songs follow this style, but aren’t memorable. There’s nothing that makes them stand out above what has become a sizeable crowd of quality Death Metal bands. The standout track for me is “Deutsches Afrika Corpse,” which has starts well, getting the head nodding with a catchy tune that again reminds very much of vintage SINISTER, even down to bass breaks. There’s a nice riff that appears at various points throughout the song and could have come straight from IMMOLATION’s “Dawn Of Possession.” It’s a good song, but it does feel like there is something missing. That might be down to the lack of a guitar solo, or it might just be that the song needs something else to lift it beyond ‘good’. There aren’t many solos on the album; there’s one in the middle of “Rocket Symphony,” which is okay, and a short one at the end of “Mudhell,” but it’s a bit messy, frenetic and doesn’t fit in too well with the rest of the song. Maybe this is something the band could improve for future albums – more solos and better ones at that. “Mudhell” also has an almost military-sounding section in the middle of the song, which although adding interest and variation, ultimately doesn’t lead anywhere. The chorus of “Venom of the Population” reminds me of “Satan Spawn, the Caco-Daemon” by DEICIDE, yet another 90s Death Metal reference in their sound. This is Death Metal played very well and I sense that these guys love the genre. I just get the feeling, as I’ve touched on a few times in this review, that there’s something missing. There’s plenty of potential here and if the band can add some more ideas and catchy, memorable songs they can be a Death Metal force to be reckoned with.

DEAD AWAKEN born from the ashes of ABYSSAL CHAOS in 2002, between that year and 2008 they released 5 self produced Demos, but certainly the most important feature of DEAD AWAKEN has been their lineup unstable, because since the early existence as a band they have suffered numerous lineup changes, even “Where Hopes turn…” was released by two members only, I am talknig about Jörgen Kristensen (V, G & B) & Mats Blyckert (D) both came from the Old school Death Metal bands ABHOTH & SUFFER. The Polish DM (VADER, BEHEMOTH, HATE) and WAR are their main influences, but the thrashing Jörgen’s riffs and the excellent Mats’s performance give a touch of distiction and acoustic independence to the music of these DM zombies. “Kingdom of Damnation”, “Deutsches Afrika corpses”, “State of Corrosion” y “Where hopes…” are tracks that will destroy your skull just like a Dum-Dum bullet. An excellent debut of this new Swedish DM Panzer, an Album with a mature and solid sound proclaiming with violence War has begun… Lately Magnus Wall & Jonas Stålhammar (Both ex ABHOTH’s members too) had joined to DEAD AWAKEN as Live members only.
