The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review

by www.mariosmetalmania.com

By Dennis van Dommelen

The Gardnerz are a relativealy new band to the scene. “The System of Nature” is their debut album on the American label Abyss records. As time goes by, the quest for the unique in music exponentially grows in futility, and one question is asked: “maybe instead of looking for originality in music we should just appreciate those all they do is the same-old, yet do it awesomely? Or is it me, blabbering again, having absolutely no idea how to open this darn review?”

Anyway, The Gardnerz is just that kind of a band – just as the homophone suggests, “routine” would be the name of the game and an immediate association that rises in all things concerning the album in question – tempo and feel-wise, the premise “The System of Nature” mostly dwells in is a moderate, quasi-gracious and self-important stride (the almost-exclusive use of major scales significantly contributes to that “majestic” feel), with a cue emphasis on basic, melodic musical approach and rather rudimentary thematic resolutions with catchy hooks and harmonies to please your ear, but without grabbing your attention all too much really.

As far as the music goes, though, the most suitable way to describe is that it that the doomy death metal delivers. I’d like to deviate from the common procedure by addressing the sound and production of the album first, since it would be the first thing to captivate your attention upon hearing this album as well – not only it’s highly crisp and clear, you’d be overwhelmed by the ferocity it comes at you from the very get go. Imagine having an enormous frying pan swung at your face, hitting it in several different places simultaneously as it lands – same goes with this album. That it says mastered at the legendary Unisound studio by Dan Swano will clearify this. So in the end The Garnerz aren’t inventing the wheel again but do present an interesting various doom/death metal album.

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) “Chalice of Black Flames” CD EP review by metalchroniques

CHAOSSWORN (Sweden) Chalice of Black Flames CD EP review

by www.metalchroniques.fr

By Aske

Chaossworn has been formed in 2004, in Sweden by Anton Johansson, singer and rhythmic guitar and Niklas Pelli on a Drum, then completed by Andreas Pelli in the bass guitar and Janne Posti in the guitar, the group realizes two demos Enthropic Human Nature in 2005 then Whores of Mankind in 2008. An entitled MCD Black Earth Funeral will follow closely, at the beginning of year 2009.

That we say it to ourselves, Chalice Of Black Flames banks of entrance on the quality and not on the quantity. It is here about an EP consisted of three titles masterised by the famous Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity, Opeth, Dissection, Marduk) in his Swedish studio ( Unisound).

Sweden besides its charms which we all know (I think naturally of the natural environment, ,lakes, forests, you will have understood) is used to producing a lot of metal band, but, which have, seems to me t-il, the defect of their quality, that to propose a clear and massive sound, with walls of guitar in reinforced concrete! let us not tell of story, it is not of it question of which it is at Chaossworn.

First of all, a first piece ” Crowned and Winged ” which opens the hostilities by delivering rhythmic one solid, lively but without the other claim than to make stamp. The band is supported by melodic guitars which progress towards bridges and tunes entêtants, glaucous, sometimes complex, with a very collected sound, close to the first ones Opeth. In brief an organic aspect, which is not without displeasing your servant. The tunes are there, the pieces have all, without exception, this fantastic potential for the stage, in live.

The second title much more black “Bringer Of Storms” sends blasts and lightning round trips to the Swedish vein. We definitively want to go up the sound completely and to start a pogo (it’s a pity, the neighbor does not agree !). The sound of guitars is very personal, always worried, overloaded with the melody.

The third and last eponymic title “Chalice Of Black Flames” the slowest and the most complex, offers, in my opinion, the most personal side of the group, dense furious and federated by furious shouts. Guitars burst out definitively and the lines of drum, saccadent as the piece progresses. We are completely crushed by these riffs, very easily memory, which gives excellent punches to the listener.

Thus here is an excellent EP to get itself immediately, by hoping that the group proposes concerts to make us drink in his “Chalice”.

ANGREPP (Sweden) “Warfare” CD review by forbidden-magazine

ANGREPP (Sweden) Warfare CD review

By Nate of the Living Dead

With ‘Warfare’ (Abyss Records), Swedish blackened thrash mob Angrepp have issued a stern, punk-infected warning to the planet’s poser population. Mixed and mastered by Dan Swano at Unisound Studios and manifesting itself at just over half an hour, the statement seems to express the message that the band has no plans of taking any prisoners in their conquest of warp-speed annihilation.

Starting off with an intro bearing an almost industrial feel, ‘Warfare’ soon kicks into mosh-or-die mode. “Five Horned Formation” sets the neck-breaking mood perfectly with the above mentioned thrash styling. This battle strategy is carried on throughout the rest of the record as well, on songs like “Dead And Destroyed”, “Rape, Kill, Rock N’ Roll” (featuring a military cadence drum intro that leads the way to a punk/metal mutation) and the title track, all of which are definitely highlights of Angrepp’s newest assault on humanity. The vocals are of the growling throat-meets-sandpaper persuasion (reminiscent of bands like Celtic Frost) from start to finish, and ride into battle quite nicely alongside old-school thrash riffing, black metal inspirations and the occasional segments of fist-pumping punk rock anarchy. The closing “Dictator” clocks in at a little over nine minutes and features probably the fastest percussion and drumming, taking on a black/death metal stance, in the ten songs found on ‘Warfare’.

The artwork that graces the cover of Angrepp’s ‘Warfare’ portrays a soldier mercilessly gunning down an unarmed victim, his crucifix necklace falling from his dying hand, as tanks and soldiers pass by in the distance without a second thought. Such is the attitude present in what the listener will feel when listening to the record itself. Angrepp is a band that seems to know exactly what they’re doing, and are perfectly fine with how they do it. This reviewer is willing to bet that fans of old-school thrash, black metal, or bands like Celtic Frost and Black Breath will also be pleased with this one!

The Gardnerz (Sweden) “The System of Nature” review by Nocturnal Hall

The GARDNERZ (Sweden) “The System of Nature” DIGI CD review

by Nocturnal Hall

By Goddess Sioux

The genre of doomed death metal has seemed to pick up speed over the last few years. Sweden of course shall give to us a supreme band in the form of THE GARDNERZ. You may dismiss the name upon first hearing it, but don’t let it fool you. THE GARDNERZ will amaze you with their gloomy mix of death metal and doom metal on The System Of Nature.

As the album begins with The Art Of Suffering you may think of Katatonia with its slow and somber guitar tones, but then the song cracks open to reveal growling death metal vocals and heavy Swedish leads. All while keeping a mid pace beat, if you can imagine that. The layers of the guitars are a dreamy sound scape of infinite melancholy. As the next song Lady In The Grave comes in we are treated to more elaborate vocals of both growling and black metal type screams, almost like a duel. Backed by intricate guitar leads that seem to mesmerize. As we go on to Shift In Thought the black metal vocals are back and the guitars are howling. Flaw In The Axiom will draw you in within the first few bars of the song, with its sorrowful and distant leads, as the song progresses into an abyss of dwelling, the ambient solo repeats throughout the song like a chorus. You aren’t going to find any fast paced songs or blast beats on this album. However, you aren’t going to find anything lame about it either. THE GARDNERZ know how to keep it heavy and they do it quite well. Think Runemagick, Amorphis and Hypocrisy if you will. There is definitely a Swedish old school sound to the guitars, and they dominate the album to their fullest potential. So many different sounds to them from acoustic to fast and heavy leads, and technically beautiful solos. Having just signed to Abyss records with Dan Swano at the controls, that should tell you right away that THE GARDNERZ are quite worthy, after only having been in existence for two years.
