MAAX (U.S.) “Unholy Rock & Roll” DIGI CD review

By Kees Schijven

MAAX started out in the summer of 2006 by founding members Kyle Kreider (guitar) and Jeff Brown (drums). MAAX have already released a debut album ‘Dawnbringer’ in 2009, after which original vocalist/bassplayer Sky Kingrey left the band. The band found an interested independant label in Abyss Records who released their album. Soon after that the ‘Six Pack Witchcraft’EP was released in 2010. Newest addition to the band followed in the person of Jeremy Starkey (Necrophagous) on bass, while Brett switched to second guitar. In this line up the band recorded their latest, third opus and second full lenght work of art, called ‘Unholy Rock & Roll’. MAAX plays a mix of old school black thrash n roll metal, A lot of Motorhead and Venom influences can be heard throughout their music, just listen to the song ‘Maax’ and you know what I mean, nothing wrong with that, certainly not since I am a long time fan of both mentioned bands. So originallity is not their main goal, that’s for sure, but what they do, they do best, they will get every party going, they are the US equivalent of european thrashers Tankard, though with a slightly different kind of music. The devil of rock n roll has arrived, his name; MAAX, songs like ‘Rot n Roll’, ‘Do What Thou Wilt’, or ‘Black Thrash Em All’ tell it all. This is a very enjoyable album, not the most technical or original, but efficiently well done. To my personal favorite tracks belong ‘Overthrone’ (really black) , ‘Black Thrash Em All’ with black raspy vocals and thrashing guitars. The production could have been done a little heavier or fatter, especially where the drums are concerned, but overall it’s a great, enjoyable album!

Rating: 78/100
