DAEMONICUS (Sweden) “Deadwork” CD review

What is a band to do. When you first pick up an instrument, its generally because you where blown away and inspired by an album, or a song on the radio, or even because of a video clip of some big hairy tattooed fucker with a guitar/bass/drum kit thrashing away, and you wanted to be that guy, and do that stuff, with the sticks, and the chicks. But as time passes, most of us realize that our hero’s are just people, people that poop, hopefully on a healthy regular 24 hour cycle, and wipe their own Klingons, tie their own shoe laces, pay bills and drive cars.

At this crossroads you have to choose.

1: Do I continue on this path and emulate my hero, start a band with like minded worshipers and produce music in honor of our false idol.

2: Do I attempt to find my own musical voice and produce something that reflects my own unique dark perverted soul.

3: Quit and get a real job, which is the easy way out that will please your family the most.

Option 1 is a cop-out, I see it every day in my country of birth and residence (South Africa). The plan seems to go like this: everyone likes “Rancid Peanuts”, but there is no chance in flaming hell that “Rancid Peanuts” will ever come to perform in the ass end of the world, so lets start a band that sounds like “Rancid Peanuts”. I think its called mimic marketing. Option 2 comes with many pitfalls, how do you create truly original music when everything has supposedly already been done?

On their new album “Deadwork”, Daemonicus seems to straddle a fine line, at times sounding like their Swedeath peers, and at times reminding of other melodeath peers. The production is far better than their last album Host of rotting flesh, and I must say the song writing has also come along a fair deal. Does it blend you may ask. Well to me it works just dandy, a great balance of melodic meets lumbering groovy death. But, at times I’m left wondering if its all too good to be true, and not just a really good cut and paste job, some ‘Dismember’ here, some ‘Hypocrisy’ there, mix well and season to taste.

I’m inclined to give Daemonicus the benefit of the doubt. This is a collection of catchy metal that I will be returning to in future, and a band I’d keep an eye on.

Rating: 7.5: Well, fuck us with a golden dildo. this shit is actually good. Color us impressed.
