FESTER (Norway) “A Celebration of Death” CD review

I had my expectations already down screwed: As the Norwegian black / death metallers FESTER terminate after years of silence but still a new album, and then botched guitarist Bjørn “Tiger” Mathisen with his second band SINCERA and half-baked “Cursed And Proud” EP the dress rehearsal. Since publishing FESTER said to advance the new plant cover that is so ruthlessly coined on the album called “A Celebration of Death” that it almost hurts. And then select the Norwegians the opening track “Rites of Ceres” as an album teaser, the first of plenty quirky booms from the speakers.

Expectations I had, of course, but anyway, even if said Bjørn “Tiger” Mathisen is the only Leftover the old line is now with the INTEGRAL Thomas Andresen (SINCERA), Jon Bakker (KAMPFAR) and the session drummer Audun Kleive resurrect. Festers last album “Silence” is already back eighteen years, and her Reunionversuch turn of the century was ended by the sudden death of their bass player again. In this respect, FESTER always felt like an unfinished story, something that is not adequately continue or, if you missed a worthy end.

To make it short: “A Celebration of Death” met expectations and reached a similar class as its predecessor. Even if the ingredients are different this time, so has the album but a great atmosphere. Which brings us the opening song, “Rites Of Ceres’ are, of course, sounds kind of quirky, yet also very distinctive. This may be due in large part to Audun Kleive, a jazz drummer with no metal past, was for the images in preference to RAGNAROKs Jontho. And he puts most of the songs with a strangely insidious and versatile drum foundation, even if the riffs are pretty straight in itself (“I’ll Hunt You Down”, “Metalized”). By the sound of the drumming on the album also sounds very mechanical, which first requires a bit of getting used to. But on the other hand, it fits very well with these old school and nasty distortion and the conjuring-hoarse and faded black metal vocals.

Anyone who “Silence” is still in your ears will feel at “A Celebration of Death” recalled – even though this time not quite as quick but effective gerifft on the guitar is. The only exception to this: the already mentioned “Metalized”, which makes its title, but it relies on Grunzvocals lowered. Fine! In addition, consistent with “March Of Death”, “Jeg Spytter På Deg” and “Last Day Of Battle” typical and most of all captivating pieces, the score with dark and eerie harmonies and simple sound only to FESTER. As a bonus, it is a remix of the opener “Rites of Ceres,” which was produced by Mortiis and hence the title “Rites of Mortiis’ bears – the remix is ultimately right, but not put me in enthusiasm.

Hopefully, that will consider the next steps FESTER as thoroughly as they have obviously put this step: create an album that stands in the tradition of their previous works, but to raise them without icons. “A Celebration of Death” stands alone and has great songs in addition to its own atmosphere: dark, mysterious, evocative. I certainly could not expect more.
