MAAX (U.S.) “Unholy Rock & Roll” DIGI CD review

By Mike Abominator

Ahh haa! My boys in Maax. Cool dudes playing some kick ass tunes. I first heard this band when Gravehill was out on the “Campaign for Death…..” 2010 U.S. Tour. We played Indianapolis with them. They surprised me that night, as I had never heard of the band. They kicked major ass and I have been a fan ever since. I did like the “6 Pack Witchcraft” EP from last year. But that production was weird and it took me a bit to really get into. Not a problem on here as the sound is crisp and clear (yet not wimpy!) They have come to the party to drink, fight and fuck and if you stand in their way, you will be beaten senseless. These motherfuckers rock, roll and black thrash with the best of them.

“Coldest Steel” starts off the blitzkrieg, with some Bad ass black metal rock and roll punked out madness! It gets a little Frosty and heavy as fuck at the end with the mid paced crushing going on. “Fight with Fire” has an Exciter/Motorhead bashing banger thing going on. It’s the perfect mix of epic metal riffs and punk as fuck attitude, with a satanic touch for good measure. The title track comes next and is the black/punk metal biker anthem. The posers laugh, then they get their head kicked in! And these guys also ride in a biker club, so scensters BEWARE! Bahahaha. Anyways, this song kicks fucking ass, total sing along “WE DON’T GIVE A FUCK!” ARGHHHHH!!!!!!! AWESOME! “Do What Thou Wilt” is up next with some more old school metal attack with some of the catchiest riffs on here. It has that total Venom rock your ass vibe! Funny how so many bands can use THAT riff in a song, mainly the old English metal bands, and it still sounds killer. Listen to the main riff of the song and you will know what I mean. THIS is the go to METAL RIFF! Maax make it sound fresh and their own though! GREAT JOB BROTHERS! The fucking REAL anthem is next as “Maax” has come to party. BURP! It has the double bass, and it is ass kicking anthem #2. You can say it’s all “Motley Crue’d out”, but it is just Venom’d out. OK, OK, it has the catchiness and rockin vibe of that old Crue rock/metal stuff, but it retains the heavy and the black metal vibe. My favorite song on here, and they are all blazers!

“Rot ‘n’ Roll” is the next banger. It starts off with chugging of doom with a killer build up. Yet another bad ass rock riff that leads the way. Makes you want to go out and drink and kick some ass for sure! “Purge of Depravity 2 (The Pentagram)” is nice and slow with acoustic guitars and a sample. Cool instrumental that would make a good live intro. The guitar solos are also cool running over the top. “Overthrone” is a totally ripping fast black metal terror banger of a song. Melodic as fuck, yet killer! Not lame melodic, good melodic. The melodies are more haunting than pretty. In the end it just kicks ass. This is also totally different than the rest of the album. It kind of starts a theme actually. The mid paced riff to end it with the funeral bell RULES! But “Black Thrash Em’ All” still retains the style and influence of the earlier punk and roll gone black/thrash songs. But this one also has a UK crossover vibe to it, like Broken Bones/English Dogs style. Which that whole thing was influenced by Venom anyways! Hahaha. Killer song!

“Deliverer” is different in the sense that it is a darker rock influenced song that still manages to kick ass. It is moody, and has a mid paced black metal vibe as well. Now just because it doesn’t have the same vibe as the other songs, doesn’t mean that it doesn’t kick major ass, because it still DOES put a boot in your corn hole! This is some really cool mid paced black metal bangery. Timmy’s vocals are especially shrieking and killer on this song at the end! Now this ripper of an album comes to an end. And this sucks, because I’m enjoying this massive onslaught of metal sickness. The last song is “One More Time”. The darkness and moodiness continues on this one. It’s more of a pure rock tune, less black than the last track. But it’s equally bad ass. What would all those clever and fancy scensters out there say? “It sounds like Warfare mixed with Dokken!” Well I say it sounds like Warfare RAPING Dokken. How’s that? It’s a killer rock/metal tune that prods along at a good pace and keeps the head banging. Enough said.

This album RULES! This is one of the best albums of the year so far. If you call yourself a heavy metal fan, GO GET IT! Yeah, my top 10 is getting crowded, but who gives a fuck, I made room for these Indiana maniacs! The boys came to fuck shit up on here and did they ever. 666% SUPPORT AND RESPECT TO MAAX! Go get this, or you will hear the ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAAX IS COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
